Hounslow History

Hounslow, located in West London, has a rich history dating back to the Saxon era, with its name derived from “Hund’s hlāw,” meaning “Hund’s mound.” It grew in significance during the medieval period as a staging post for travelers heading to and from London. The area saw further development in the 19th century with the arrival of the railway, which spurred urbanization and industrial growth. Today, Hounslow is known for its proximity to Heathrow Airport, making it a bustling, diverse borough with a blend of historical charm and modern infrastructure.

The London Borough of Hounslow has a wealth of attractions, hotels, accommodation and an efficient network of public and private transport making the borough very accessible. With Heathrow on its western boundary, the Palladian splendour of Chiswick House at its eastern end and the river Thames to its south, Hounslow has much to offer visitors to West London.

The area has a rich and unexpected heritage with the stately homes of Syon and Osterley; museum collections which bring to life musical, steam and local social history, as well as the artist William Hogarth’s House; and you can see tropical butterflies, crocodiles, rare breeds and even find out how beer is made.
